CHALLENGE: To guide the preservation and restoration of the cultural landscape at the Warren Hull Family Home & Farmstead, believed to be the oldest stone dwelling in Erie County, New York. The site is currently being restored by the Hull House Foundation as an educational and interpretive center for early 19th century life on the western New York frontier. The landscape provides the setting and context for site program activities at the Hull House including school programs, theme weekends, exhibitions, environmental protection programs, and other special events on the property. The treatment of the cultural landscape is a critical component to the preservation and interpretation of this important landmark.
SOLUTIONS: edr collaborated with a team of specialists, a professional historian and a preservation planner to integrate their knowledge, research and findings into an accessible and appealing graphic format.
edr provided a site history supplement, illustrative interpretive rendering, and conceptual site development plan to communicate the historic qualities and vision for the restoration of the landscape associated with this important landmark.
HIGHLIGHTS: The American Society of Landscape Architects has recognized this project with a Merit Award of Achievement in Research, Historic Preservation, and Communication.
